The Push
The Push Stan woke to a misty rain pinging off the edge of his helmet, the steady drip impacting on the webbing strapped to his chest, each splash matching the impacting explosions of the shelling penetrating the land above. As he lifted the blanket from around his shoulders he felt the skittering of a rat from the small of his back, with fur black as night and eyes of crimson, it shreaked up the wall into its burrow. Stan paid no mind and wiped the sleep from his eyes as the dawn light crested the top of the trench. He turned his head and peered into the periscope sight which was fixed next to him. It was the same view every morning, blackened trees, fog and barbed wire.

The Shadow Creeping In
The shadow, the dark, the bleakness of the demon on my shoulders. Pushing me under the stillness of the water, forcing me into the depths of my mind. Even though I’m surrounded by the light the darkness takes over. My eyes become tunneled and fixed and all the awful feelings come flooding in, causing me to take deeper breaths and receiving little air. This demon knows me well, it knows where to poke and prod and to get maximum torture in my mind, an expert of its craft. It lets me become clear for moments at a time. Then it pushes me under, again and again, sinking its jagged teeth into my thoughts making my vision darker showing little to no light. The memories come flooding in to provoke a response, tears begin flooding from my eyes. My chest begins to contract and ache with the weight of my burdens to bear. Regrets pile in from the past and familiar faces of those I wronged whisper in my ears “you're to blame”. “ This is your fault”.

Moving on the Board
I wrote this shortly after I separated from my soon-to-be ex-wife, the world was bleak and I was struggling to move forward with my life. A friend of mine said I should write after a few posts from Facebook expressing my feelings and here is a take on the post I made describing the last several months.
