Appetite
The mirror showed a reflection that wasn't my own. Not in my current state. Not in my current room. My fingers reached for my dry translucent skin but watched them find a sun-kissed freckle-splattered face framed by long auburn hair. Emerald eyes gleamed back at me and no longer clung to hope; they glistened with triumph. Surrounded by a range of trees in an empty forest, my reflection reminded me to look forward to the future.

Dig. Gotta… get… out. Albert hunched over, held his yellow sides with his front four-toed paws, and caught his breath. Then refusing defeat, he pushed back, eyed his prison bars, and charged forward on all fours. Let. Go. Of. Me. He grunted each word with a full-body lunge against the interlocking fingers of the boy who’d plucked him from his family.

The outside world was unknown to her, but she could see a glimpse of it through the window in his room. Red, yellow, and green, joined with orange, blue, and pink, coloring a backdrop for warm air before a chill front would drop in. Then, abruptly turning even colder, forcing hues of white and gray to take center stage.

I hated these dreams at first. Falling. The wind filled my ears as a moist dew from the clouds engulfed me one after another. Yet, my eyes were always oddly unaffected. I’d started using this as a tell to determine if I was dreaming instead of freaking out. I’d look to my left, right, above, and below before smiling and taking in the familiar experience.
