Summer Magic
My younger siblings probably assumed we were camping just for fun. What family wouldn’t want to get away from the sweltering city to the whispering, pine-scented woods? But I was the oldest, nearly out of high school, and I knew that we had packed up everything and headed out to live in tents in the national park for the summer because we couldn’t afford rent.

There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. The voice startled Anamir out of a deep and cloudless sleep. He jerked upright, instinctively reaching for his long knife on the wooden chair beside his bed. He sat listening a long while, until the silence of the night and the heaviness of his eyelids convinced him he had been dreaming.

Rip Current
The girl's bright pink visor catches Lei's eye. The rest of her—skinny legs, tank top stretched over barely-there bulges, brown ponytail—is nondescript. But unlike other tweeners thronging the sunny boardwalk, scoping out snacks and boys, this girl scrutinizes the adults streaming past as she walks against the flow of pedestrians.

CRAFTING HOPE
CRAFTING HOPE *June, 2021* I’m writing on behalf of my daughter, age 16. I watch her as she chooses just the right yarn from one of the many baskets overflowing with colorful skeins around her bed. The light in her room is dim, so sometimes she shines a flashlight briefly to make sure she has the right color. Then she picks up her crochet hook and the granny square she has started, and begins adding rows around the center blossom. Stitch by stitch, a flower blooms.
