Who Will Lead the Nation's School Districts
Last year there was a surge of leaders leaving the superintendency. This year, the number is expected to dramatically increase. While the tenure of superintendents, especially in urban districts, has always been an issue, the surge of individuals leaving the profession is deeply concerning. While there has been much attention, rightfully so, about the very real teacher shortage, there is also a dearth of candidates, prepared and ready, to take on the mantle of leading the close to 15,000 school districts across the country. School District Bond Elections – Reflections From a Successful Campaign in a Difficult Year for Bonds
In the May 2022 Texas uniform election, 124 school districts across the state asked voters to approve bond elections for various capital projects. Of the 124 districts that called for bond elections, there were a total of 205 ballot propositions. Despite the varying needs presented by school districts, a record low number of ballot propositions were approved by voters in this election. Statewide, 50.7% of the bond ballot propositions were approved in May, compared to the 65.2% average approval of bond ballot propositions since 2017.

Nationwide Challenges Continue to Test the Resolve of School Superintendents
I recently attended The School Superintendent Association’s (AASA) national conference and had the opportunity to interact and engage superintendents from across the country. Some have served for several years in their current roles, while others were newer to the position. What struck me in all of my discussions was the commonality in the challenges and pressures that superintendents in all regions of the nation are currently facing and the ones that loom large in the near future.
