Papa's Visit
I wondered why we had not seen papa Sylvester more than once in our lives. He arrived at our door in Milwaukee on a moderately cold and gray day in October of 1965. As I remember he was the same height as my father about 5’10” and a little bit thinner. My father was 5’10” weighed about 170-180 lbs. this is what I heard my mother say. As a child you do not really notice weight unless someone is extremely thin or fat. His complexion was very fair about two shades lighter than my dad’s (who was on the light side as we say in the black community) other than that their faces were the same. All the same features, wide noses, strong cheek bones and they both had a very bright and huge smile.

Our Blessed Life
Our Simple Blessed Life The room on the other side of the hall was dark however a small amount of daylight shown between the slightly bowed window shade. This light focused on the top of the dresser. On top are brushes, facial products a hair dryer let you know that at least two people sleep in this place. The huge faux antique mirror makes the person looking into it appear a bit rounder than they actually were. The room smells of the scented candles and cologne that is on the dresser. Each item competes with the other items like the men’s shaver stands out bolder than the petite perfume bottle from an earlier era. You could tell the lady of the house uses the dresser more than her husband. The eclectic assortment of cosmetics all natural handmade facial creams and hair moisturizers juxtaposed with high end brands of the same type all made to look very elegant with her jewelry box beaming over with faux pearls, real gold earrings and exotic bracelets representing the many cultures of the world.

One Cold Winter Day
One Cold Winter Day Today as I listen to the news I hate to hear that the Covid-19 cases are going up. This is mostly due to people avoiding taking the vaccine. Now some people can’t take it due to being allergic to some ingredient of the vaccine or have other health related issues. Many are afraid and the fear is actually putting them at risk of dying and possibly infecting others who may also get very ill or die. Then we have the politics of it all. Of all things to get political over taking a vaccine should not be one of them. Some people of color have had horrible relationships with the medical industry. I am old enough to remember when most of the doctors in my inner city community were not people of color. These people depending on their knowledge about us or other people of color would sometimes treat us as though they were doing something very special and we needed to be very appreciative and show it! They were making a great sacrifice to come down here to the ghetto to serve you!

Miracle Chocolate
For many years I have had a piece of chocolate cake become a part of my life and when I devour it, love it and truly enjoy it my conflict or problem goes away. When I was six I was skinny my hair frizzy it just framed my slender face like a half oval head piece of wild brush. People laughed at me so much so I would have nightmares that featured their laughter. One nightmare repeated itself over and over again until I was well into my teens. A fat clown would walk up to me stand toe to toe and laugh very hard and loud. Then a Squirrel Monkey would taunt me saying “You are ugly, no one loves you.” Then it would disappear as quickly as it had appeared. When I would wake from the awful dream like clockwork a day or two later somehow a piece of chocolate cake would become a part of my life.
