The Road Past Judgement

Everlasting Smile
The first thing that you think of when you hear "California" isn't a pear tree. You think of beaches and the sun. But there we were bumping along the ends of an old train track, looking out at a field of green trees with even greener fruit. It wasn't the California dream you see on TV- no smiling faces, no groups of friends wiggling their toes in the sand. It wasn't what a kid my age imagined when I found out that's where we were going.

I stand at our backyard table made of old split wood. It seems like the view from our backyard is endless as I watch Stacey dance near her mother's flowerbed. She is so young at just 5; her ideas are still so new. Stacey has on an all-white dress. I feel mildly disgusted to realize her mother has dressed her up for the day.

In the middle of the table, in a dark apartment, is a single slice of chocolate cake. Next to the cake are a fork and a large knife. It sits tauntingly under the overhead light as I struggle to unlace my hands from uncomfortable restraints. I twist, turn and bite at the thick duct tape over my mouth until I hear the faint sound of footsteps coming from the next room.

This is a life I've never known. Every time I feel like I'm an intruder, no matter how many times I'm told I'm not. A loud boom steals my attention. I am out of bed in a second, peering out my window to locate the sound over the vast opened space of vacant and abandoned farmland. The night sky twists and turns. It is swirling with dark clouds, unlike anything I've ever seen before.
