The river ran backwards on the day the Queen vanished. The small, light green stream of the Cascade began to froth into a deep, effervescent river and soon grew to be a vast lake.

1. Silence... Endless silence had pervaded the world. No matter how many leagues I travelled, it was the same. Desolation had established its hold and would not relent. The movement of my wings was the only natural cadence that remained, and it was all my fault.
