How to escape the "norms" of society

Why do we follow standards others set for us? Because we all feel like if we don't we will be abnormally different. We think that being different will change the way others look at us. In some ways, that statement is correct. But if you base your life around what other people think of you, you will go nowhere. If we go off society's standards then we will all be working in a 9-5 as a slave, working our bottoms off just to earn a few measly dollars for our time.
