Of Heart Surgery and Humanity
Each year, more than one million children worldwide are born with some type of heart defect. Many of them die before their first birthday, and thousands more die before reaching adulthood. Since 1994, the organization Shevet Achim ("Brothers Dwelling in Unity") has enabled children from Gaza, Iraq, Iraqi Kurdistan, and Syria to receive life-saving heart surgery in the hospitals of Israel. In the "land of their enemy", these dying children are given a second chance at life.

REGRET
Small flags fluttered at the base of several headstones in the military cemetery. Some of the bouquets placed on the grave markers were bright and vibrant, but others were withered and dying, leaving behind a shower of crumbling, scattered petals. Aside from a bird perched in a nearby tree, and a deer wandering between the neat rows of white granite headstones, I was the only living thing there, a fact that I was grateful for. When I come here to visit friends that I have lost, I prefer to share my thoughts with them alone.
