To Love an Owl. Runner-Up in Return of the Night Owl Challenge.
She looks like a walking marshmallow, or perhaps a movie starlet. The coat smells like wealth. She couldn’t tell you what wealth smells like, only that this is it. An ephemeral thing; when she tries to catch the words, they flicker away. But her body knows, like it knows the smell of snow.

The Pink Hedgehog
I find the pink hedgehog figurine in a flea market. Spiky, spunky, and improbably fuscia, it reminds me of Gracie. Gracie loves hedgehogs. If my parents weren’t diametrically opposed to any animal smaller than an Australian shepherd, we’d probably have five or six of them, with names like Bartholomew or Hazelnut or Jamie.

Cigarette Psychic
“The last cigarette I smoked was when my dad died,” the boy mutters, choking on tobacco, or maybe remorse. They stand at the edge of their rented gravel lot, in the shade of a Bradford pear tree - a feeble attempt to escape the spring heat. Charleston is a lovely town, but so hot. It should not be so hot this early in the year. Esma has no patience for heat anymore; her hormones make enough of their own these days.
