El Maclin is a writer and analyst who lives on a historic family farm. Her current project is The Country Life. Merging 21st-century globetrotting and some of the oldest ways, the series asks: What makes a monster, and what makes a human?

In the deepest part of the dark, well past midnight but nowhere near dawn, Lianna worked in her night garden. The moon, wan but bright, hung just above the black treetops. Even the crickets and treefrogs had stopped their singing for the night, and the world was still.

Micah became a curiosity at school. Always a quiet boy who loathed attention, now he interested everyone. He was the boy whose parents had died, that greatest fear of so many children. So they whispered about him in the halls, the macabre fascination that can possess the young on full display for Micah. He’d walk with shoulders hunched, wishing he could pull his head in and hide like the turtles he watched on the pond.

She looked a little over 40 when they met, and a little over 40 still. He, on the other hand, was now taller than she, a little over 40 himself, and feeling much older. He was tired, and sad once again, and he found himself glad to be back in the restful kitchen with its soft glow.

He stood still in the gate, one foot on grass and one on gravel, a statue of himself. His stomach was ice and he shivered, even in the hard Tennessee heat. Over his shoulder the last of the sunset stretched above the cotton fields, golden bronze and deep red. A new sickle moon hovered in the gathering dark, pale white and deep blue against the flaring colors below.

They worked together in silence, sitting back to back and working across dahlia beds on either side of the path, pulling weeds and tying stems. The peace of the physical work and the satisfaction that came from leaving something better than he found it was balm to Micah, as it always had been.
