“Santa Fe, New Mexico” Golden Sunset on the Sandia Mountain Range My Hometown - “Echo Leta Johnson - A True Work Of Art.” Circa 1999. A tagline once used on the first website I produced, built and managed to display my art. Who am I to conceit such a statement? I am Echo. Santa Fe, New Mexico bred and proud as hell to be from this magical city.

"The Stronghearts"
It was the summer of ’79 when I first laid eyes on them. A 1956 teal blue Ford sedan rumbled by our Santa Fe style compound, our home, where I and my siblings grew up. The neighborhood and particularly the street we lived on; "Camino Sierra Vista" was considered “The Barrio” in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A Spanish term for “The Ghetto.” However, we were so fond of our hood and had no idea that we were poor, nor lived in a part of town that was considered less than.

The Man Behind The Legend
The year was 1975 as the rusty blue Ford pickup rolled through the winding roads of the Texas Hill Country. At the wheel was a handsome man with wild hair and a beard to match. His steel gray eyes pierced the darkness ahead. His young teenage bride and their beautiful three month old daughter sat next to him on the single black and tattered leather seat. Their daughter was swaddled tightly in her warm quilt her momma had made for her. The cherub baby lulled by the bends in the road, slowly rolled back and forth on the seat, placed safely in the middle of her momma and poppa. There was no heater. There were no seat belts. A single radio station played classic old country music. Willie, Waylon & The Boys. All of their possessions were piled high in the back of light blue Ford. The adventure of their life was transpiring, though not as either one of them would conceive of nor expected.

The Round Table
by Echo Johnson Oh, how I held court. The crowd gravitated to me. I had been holding court for what seemed like a lifetime and then was silenced for what felt like an eternity. One day I came alive again. “She” discovered me and gave me a second shot at what I did best. And that was creating endless bonds with people. All sorts of bonds. New friendships. Extremely difficult conversations. Laughter. Tears. Screams of sorrow and belly laughs so loud, they woke up the entire neighborhood. I was “The Entertainment.” To her, my new owner I was, a brand-new purchase. However, the reality was I was an undervalued steal from the local thrift shop that held so many secrets. Yes, I was small, but I was ordained in mosaic tile with imperfections. I stood proud and I made a statement. My journey with her began about 5 years ago. And this journey was no doubt my favorite one yet.
