It is a concept that emerged in the 1990s in response to the changing nature of global security threats, which were increasingly affecting ordinary people rather than just nation-states. The focus of human security is on safeguarding the well-being and dignity of individuals, and it includes both traditional security threats like armed conflict, as well as non-traditional threats such as poverty, disease, and environmental degradation.
