O'Connell Bridge - Pt. 17
LC sat in a lawn chair and dozed. He had a scheduled Saturday off. A privilege he got once a quarter. He had polished and cleaned his old truck and now he was sitting on the street in the town of Burgaw at a car show. He had all the statistics on his rebuild, printed courtesy of a clerk at the ER who copied all of his one page descriptions as an exchange for him changing the tire on her car early one morning.

The first of June, LC spent the day running errands, paying bills, and generally doing what needed to be done. At 2 PM, he received a parcel from the Gentleman’s Corner clothing store. It contained a blue sports jacket, tan pants, a white knit shirt, underwear, a belt, and shoes. A note was placed in the package. “Traveling clothes.”

Mike Smith Is Dead—Pt. 27 and 28
At five in the morning two days later Mitch VanHorn’s phone rang and an official voice told him a limo was parked at his curb. He had thirty minutes to be on his way downtown to the Eisenhower building. At six thirty that morning he boarded a familiar elevator that took him to a special part of the office building. He was escorted in and told to wait. Five minutes later Ivan Sessions came into the room. They looked at each other and shrugged. Sessions used a handkerchief to wipe the perspiration from his forehead.

Rosa and Kip sat in a hallway leading from the rectory to the chapel. Rosa whispered to Kip. “At the funeral liturgy, the Church gathers with the family and friends to give praise and thanks to God for Christ's victory over sin and death, to commend the deceased to God's mercy and compassion, and to seek strength in the proclamation of the Easter mystery. The funeral liturgy is an act of worship, and not merely an expression of grief.”

O'Connell Bridge - Pt. 12
“Well, Betty Jo said she’s getting a one bedroom in Leland in the fall, and like I don’t have a roommate yet; but she’s going to sublet my room here to her cousin this summer. I said that was okay even though it’s my name on the lease. it’s not really a sublet, her cousin is just visiting and paying her a share of the rent to stay. I told her I was going to Boston anyway, and wouldn’t be back till late August.” Caitlin complained to LC while he was going up the stairs. “If my aunt finds out I only have terminal papers for classes in the fall and don’t really have to be here, I might not be living in the apartment at all, just stuck in Boston doing her bidding.”

“I guess I need two weeks off starting June 25.” LC sat in the Human Resources office at New Hanover Medical Center. “I’ve been sending apps for grad school but haven’t had an acceptance yet. So, I suppose when I come back from my trip, I will be available to reassume my duties at the ER—North.”

Mike Smith Is Dead—Pt. 25
Lucky for Giles, one of the bullets passed through her and hit a car, which set off the alarms. Within minutes she was discovered in a pool of blood. A person walking to their car spotted Giles’ slumped body and called 911. Minutes later EMTs and police arrived and Giles was transported to Washington Hospital Emergency room. Although her pulse was barely visible she was alive and immediately put on life support. Without any identification security forces were forced to take DNA and fingerprints in the emergency room and by the time the doctors were ready to treat her they still had no answers to who she was or where she was from. She was toe tagged, “Female 1-alien” and given a name of “Miss Ava.”
