The Gift of Tomorrow
“Where’s Steven?!” I say to myself. I got home from school 10 minutes ago and can’t wait for him to come and play. I kick my legs under the table wondering why it’s taking him so long to get here. I’ve been looking forward to this all day, mostly because class was pretty boring. We were learning about boys and girls and how their bodies do different things like pee and make babies. I’m not sure why all this is so important, but Ms. Sally seems to care, and I like Ms. Sally, so I paid attention and learned some cool things. She talked about the past a lot. She looked a bit sad, I hope it wasn't because of me or the other kids in the class—we tried our best to pay attention.

DIIIIIING DOOONG! Linda awoke with a startle; her head was pounding, and her ears were ringing. This was her first real hangover since the day after her father’s funeral over two years ago. With a groan, she held her head in an attempt to lighten the weight. Reluctantly standing up, she headed towards the front door ready to give her two cents to the annoying internet salesperson she assumed would be at the door. Instead, a drone silently hovered a few inches from her face. As Linda stood in the doorway, her jaw dropped at the unlikely visitor. The drone placed a small black box with a majestic blue and red bow gently by her feet. Before Linda could process what had just happened, the drone zoomed away without a sound. Linda lowered herself and was suddenly overcome by a wave of nausea reminding her of the poor decisions she had made the night before.

10 tips to help you prepare for your future TED talk
If you had asked me a few years ago whether I’d ever consider giving a TED talk, I’d probably have laughed a little too much and said that you were out of your mind. In reality, I’ve always enjoyed public speaking, but as an academic, I was more used to sharing data than my personal experience. Lo and behold, one day I saw a social media post advertising a TED event at my former university, and I figured, why not?

Have you ever heard of the stereotype that all pets resemble their owner? Well, it might be truer than we believe. That’s what I came to realize after reflecting on the past nine years with my cat Miri- a beautiful, fluffy, stubborn ball of fur.
