Because of Betsy
When I was a little girl in the late 60s, it seemed everyone’s mother subscribed to Good Housekeeping, Ladies’ Home Journal, and most importantly, McCall’s. Most importantly, because McCall’s was the home of Betsy McCall, undisputed princess of the paper doll world and obsession of schoolgirls everywhere. Betsy, with her beautiful outfits and her interesting friends and her wonderful adventures, was the girl we all dreamed about being.

Don't Tell Your Mother
"Don't tell your mother." From the time I was about six or so, those were beyond doubt the four best words in the English language. They meant Dad was about to involve me in something slightly dangerous, faintly inappropriate, or best of all, both. It meant we were about to have an Adventure.

Saving Shadow
There are a lot of ways to mess up a dog. Abuse is the first thing that comes to mind, especially when talking about rescues. We expect dogs that have been beaten to have behavior problems and many of them do. But a lot depends on how old the dog was when the abuse began, how severe it was, and how long it continued. Many abused dogs are actually starved for human affection and will bond tightly to the first person who gives them consistent kindness and care.
