Dear Dr. Donna - Dilemma: How to Help a Loved One in an Abusive Relationship
Dear Dr. Donna, My daughter is in an abusive relationship. Her husband is very controlling and there have been times when he has gotten physically violent with her. Periodically when it gets to be too much for her she will leave (we go “rescue” her) but she always goes back. I know this is not a unique story — a lot of women do this, but I don’t understand why. We want to help her, but it is hard for us to get her set up in her new life only to see her go back. We always help just in case this is the time she will finally go through with it, but we are emotionally exhausted and it is a financial strain as well. We don’t want to NOT help her, but we also aren’t sure our “help” is actually helping. Is there something else we can try? How can we be supportive to her in a way that is actually beneficial? And are there times when we should just stay out of it?

Going “Back Home”
THE STORY I was 40-something. I walked across the threshold of the house I grew up in. It was . . . From the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, who said, “No man ever steps in the same river twice, for it’s not the same river and he’s not the same man,” to Bon Jovi, who asked, “Who says you can’t go home?” humanity has ruminated on returning to our childhood homes.

Sometimes a Sweatshirt is Just a Sweatshirt . . .
The Story I have a friend who wears a Harvard Law sweatshirt. She didn’t study there. She wanted to, but didn’t. But she doesn’t mind if you think so when you see her wearing the sweatshirt. In fact, that’s pretty much why she wears it.

The Persuasive Power of Words
The Story Newly landed in Italy, we gorged ourselves on everything Italian. The sights, sounds and food were all to die for. Pizza, pasta and peperonata became our daily fare. Even the local cats and dogs could be seen enjoying huge bowls of spaghetti. The country, the weather and the food were all delicious. Not to speak of the wonderful wine … but I digress.

If at First You Don’t “Succeed” . . . Fail, Fail, Again
The Story I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed. — Michael Jordan

Does B613 Really Exist?
B613? Hollywood will always be Hollywood. There will always be ridiculous chase scenes, impossible rescues and implausible conspiracies, each accompanied by the proverbial warning, “Don’t try this at home.” But sometimes, when art seems to imitate life and aspects of the fantasy world on the page or screen seem to mirror our reality, we end up asking ourselves, “Is it possible? Is that really true?”
