The Ritual of Demand, Chapter Two
The subsequent phases of the solar cycle saw a tremendous change in Flashpower. He was a happier and more confident Mini-Flash all round. He lost his wan distracted look and his cheeks flushed with colour, the freckles on his snub nose standing out boldly. In class he could concentrate again, and his grades began to improve. Even his Flashball picked up a little, and when someone got the better of him he started taking it as any boy would, instead of getting his knickers in a twist. The adult Flashes all agreed Flashpower was finally getting the hang of being the age he was.

The Ritual of Demand, Chapter One
So there were Flashpower and Flashfair, 4-H-N guessed, crashing through the undergrowth of a barren outback planet astride local steeds not dissimilar to bipedal dinosaurs. Flashpower was somewhat the elder, leggy and restless in a tunic of brown, apparently determined to keep the lead. Flashfair meanwhile wore white, and seemed to have been named for his complexion and hair. Both Mini-Flashes, it went without saying, bore on their breasts the chunky old lightning-bolt logo.

Vertiginous, Chapter Two
Since it seemed to have turned into yet another undercover mission, crowds were going to be best avoided, because 4-H-N’s disguise was unlikely to work on Mini-Flashes who already knew her. Flashlight for example had known who she was even when she had her nightie on. She couldn’t risk running into some friend who’d accidentally give the game away, so she led the senior to a windswept plateau nestled high amidst the conurbation’s upper strata, where was an out-of-the way park. Once there she stood and surveyed Flashfrond, he having told her that that was his name.

Vertiginous, Chapter One
4-H-N in her leotard and leg-warmers had been doing some stretches at the gym. She knew that when things weren’t going well in this galaxy she had a tendency to look back to Houkase High, but didn’t think anyone could blame her just now for ditching the tunic and boots. After the latest she’d learned from Psiona, 4-H-N was needing ever more such snatched little hours to transport her to simpler and happier days.

Actualsis and her Arena, Chapter Three
Yells and entreaties and palms slapping frantically on the forcefield’s unyielding wall proved not to be the way ahead. Already the fast-filling froth was soaking both victims under their tunics, waist-high, chest-high, armpit-high. Mini-Flash Phytolith was shrieking aloud that he’d always known it would be the second gender, and at least he was going to die hating them and that much remained for him. To Flashslip it was little more than noise, but even so it wasn’t conducive to formulating an escape-plan, and as the gushing waters thrashed into his mouth and he floundered, going under, all he could think of was the darkness of the depths and that shimmery silver circle which for the life of him he hadn’t been able to –

Actualsis and her Arena, Chapter Two
The next couple of hours were long. As Flashslip had observed to himself once already, there was nothing new about any of it. These days he could barely go to the Conurbation at weekends, or brave the Headquarters corridors when neophytes were finishing their shifts, without one girl or other subjecting him to the same species of tease. Some show-off whose day couldn’t be complete until she’d made her male senior fidgety and restless. Then however, a boy at least had the option of refusing to play along – of stalking off, or just trying to ignore the temptation to look.

The House Next Door, Chapter Two
How Mini-Flash Juniper made it, she would never know. All she knew was that she somehow did. The landing was a square outspread before her, bookcases stretching to the ceiling, and several doors leading off. Some of these were closed, but the one to her immediate right was gateway to a blaze of golden-red sunset which the corner at the foot of the stairs had cut out. It measured a brilliant panel on the rug which spanned the old board floor, and within the bounds of its fiery angles Flashsatsumas sat, his back to Mini-Flash Juniper. He was wearing his containment-suit, as he hadn’t been when she saw him last, and the books he’d talked about were stacked before him.

What Psiona Saw, Chapter Three
Psiona insisted on setting up some test-tubes at once, and even the scarcely-there hints of vanilla-pod and laundered linen which were her idea of smelling were much needed by 4-H-N just then. Having sniffed a few, she could feel a little of what was in her starting to settle. The girls sat on either side of the circular tea-table, Psiona’s chemistry kit between them, and she for a time waiting in patience while 4-H-N’s tiny flaring nostrils did the work.

What Psiona Saw, Chapter Two
4-H-N blinked when that one opened her hotel room door. It let onto the interior of an asteroidal cave, whose rocky walls were embellished by various items of technological apparatus. Seated before a monitor-screen and control-panel was another, identical Psiona, this one clad in the diaphanous gauzy garments of her homeworld.
