My Dear Mother-in-Law
Can we talk about mothers-in-law for a second? I know I left my last story half way there and I promise I will finish it, eventually. However, I wrote that story on my 5-hour flight to see my boyfriend since he started his PhD and moved 2000 miles away. I was so happy I was going to spend some time with him that it inspired me to tell our story. I’ve been here for two weeks and they have been bliss. It’s like our own little heaven where we help each other around the house and never wear pants just because we can. Now, his mother showed up Thursday and tomorrow, Sunday, is my last day here before I go back home and don’t see him again for god knows how long. She arrived and I already knew it was going to be difficult since I don’t particularly like her but I know he is happy she’s here and that’s all that matters to me.

This Fairytale Has Mice Too
If you grew up in the age of Disney movies, you know every little girl’s dream is to one day become a princess and have prince charming rescue them from the metaphorical tower their lives are. Personally I was always more interested in the little animal helpers that came with it, boys seemed a little too dumb at that age. I wanted mice and birds to do my chores so I could sit all day in the grass and read my books and paint with my watercolors. Soon I learned this was not the way life worked and if my mother saw a rat in the house she would probably faint, so I had to avoid that at all cost. However, Disney didn’t get the narrative completely wrong, and I didn’t get a makeover from my little helpers, but I did meet my price charming because of them, so that’s close enough.

Mirror
Him: We hadn't talked in a while, not since everything got so fucked up between us but she's right in front of me now… I know it was all my fault but I don't say it. I know I should apologize or at least try to explain myself to her, but I don’t. How do you apologize for ruining someone so beautiful; how do you explain something not even you understand?

Pretty or Smart
Since I come from a Hispanic family, it is tradition that girls must wait to alter their appearance until they are 15 years old. The reasoning behind this mentality was always lost on me but I always respected traditions since I didn’t want to upset my parents. If we’re being honest I was always too afraid to go against any authority figure, I just assumed they knew best and that was all. However, the day I turned 15 was one of the happiest days of my life, not because I got fancy pictures with extravagant ball gowns or shiny heels, it was because I got so much makeup. As mentioned before, I wasn’t allowed to wear any makeup before, so you can imagine my excitement when my mother and aunt took me to a Mac store and bought me all the essentials. I was so happy and impatient I stayed up very late that night just to play with all my new toys, truth be told I ended up looking like a horrifying clown but it was so worth it. I’ve always been an artist, drawing is one of my favorite hobbies in the world. However, life gets busy and you don’t always have time for it, but makeup allows me to draw everyday on myself and the happiness that brings me is priceless.

How Not to Die
When I was in my junior year of high school I started to be more anxious than usual. I began to have insomnia and since I was taking such hard classes and studying for my SATs I became very distant from myself and my needs. Eventually it got to a point where I would spend days without eating a proper meal or sleeping. I am only human, but in my obsession with being perfect I became so ill I was hospitalized for 10 days do to heart failure. My body gave up on me; the lack of food and sleep got me down to 84 pounds, which led to feeding tubes down my nose and painful needles everywhere. I didn’t want to accept it, I always thought this was just a coincidence and that I was fine, I just needed to get through the year and everything would go back to the way it was. However, as you can guess that wasn’t the case. I developed depression and became such a ghost of a person I stopped recognizing myself. This went on for over a year until it became so much for me I started to harm myself in many ways, no need to mention them, you can guess. I became obsessed with death and the peace I thought it would bring me. I planned it many times in my head, I even started leaving notes for my friends and family so they would have something to hold on to when I was no longer here. So, trust me when I say I know what it feels like to see no choice, no light whatsoever in the life you’re living. But take it from a survivor of such a horrible illness, you can make it through.

Just a Little More than Friends
Dear friend: The day it all started, my heart was beating through my shirt so fast I was scared you could feel it. In fact, I was scared about a lot of things, but my heart was the most obvious one. Your confidence and sweetness made me feel protected, something I hadn’t felt since I was a little girl, before life had taken away my innocence and beautiful view of the world. However, that confidence didn’t last for long, and soon I realized you were nothing like the person I thought you were. Instead you’re just another soul that was lost in the void, yet had an air of coolness. Nice job fooling everyone, but most importantly I would like to congratulate you on fooling me. You see, a long time ago I promised myself I would never let another pair of dreamy eyes fool me, and as I once said to you, “I’m so scared of losing something I love that I refuse to love anything at all.” So, once again, congratulations, you made me break that promise and I don’t mean it because I felt for you, because I didn’t. I could never love you in that way; as much as I hate to admit it, we’re too much alike in the sense that we are both horrible people. Anyways, you fooled me in the sense that I was entirely convinced you were my friend and that you cared about me in a way that went beyond what was under my skirt or should I say jeans?
