But since the guards that manned the Eastern and Southern gates were usually drunk even during the daylight hours, the distinction between who was an “in-towner” and who was an “out-of-towner” was rarely enforced.

"Pellanor in the Otherworld"
The aroma of fresh-cooked meat, the bouquet of various wines and ales, and the enticing laughter of a dozen cheerful conversations would have been much more enjoyable if the dwarf hadn’t been lying flat on his back. His rugged face was edged by a trimmed rusty-red beard less than a hand in length, short enough that many non-dwarves mistook him for a surprisingly muscular female dwarf. But such an appraisal would have been dissuaded as soon as they heard his deep, gravelly voice. His current position hadn’t resulted from combat, nor from a fall. In fact, he couldn’t recall why it was that he’d come to be lying here–

“Deception, Devotion, and Destruction”
The largest asteroid orbiting Xira Glowing Five had been known as a pirate haven for decades, but no one had ever bothered to mount a sufficient naval force to take them out. One of the reasons for such reluctance was the rumor that the asteroid had some sort of ancient defensive system that could destroy any ship up to a four-decker in size without firing a shot. No admiral had bothered to challenge that rumor. Without a major fleet effort, the only way into the maw of the defenses was to sneak in as a pirate yourself.

“Pirates, Plunder, and a Plethora of Problems”
The four adventurers soon found themselves in an elegant drawing room overflowing with tall bookshelves, large map tables, and rows of map stands that held dozens of tubes for rolled maps. Various brass navigation instruments, mostly sextants and telescopes, lay scattered about the room, as if their owner still cared too much for them to put them into storage, yet knew they were of little use in the modern day of astral navigation.

Part of him wanted so badly to remain in the Cathedral that it was like dragging an anchor against the rest of his will. But he held true to the desire to see his comrades again, and eventually, he began to gain an awareness of his surroundings.

"Not Yet, Panda, Not Yet"
As my ex-wife and her sister sat sobbing at the Vet’s that Thanksgiving weekend in 2017, I did my best to remain resolute. It didn’t help that the Vet was also crying, after delivering the news that due to an accident the day before, she was recommending that Panda be put down.
