I grew up in a single parent home before it was the common thing to do. We were never wealthy, but there was always laughter in our home. Now as an adult with my own family, I still value joy and laughter more than material things.

We drove up the snowy, winding road towards the cozy A-frame cabin. The sweater my wife was wearing was the worst yet. It had tiny bells that made a tinkling sound whenever she moved the slightest, and miniature lights sewn into the already luminescent scene of Santa’s sleigh running off the roof of a house that rivaled the Griswold’s in the movie. The lead reindeer had a red lightbulb bigger by a factor of ten than the rest for a nose, and if you pressed on a spot on his antler, it would sing “Grandma got run over by a reindeer” and blink in sync with the song. The kids in the back seat were sporting matching red and white sweatshirts with Thing 1 and Thing 2 printed on them, and they were poised to ask me if we can go home yet. We haven’t even arrived. I stare them down in the rear view mirror and they go back to their phones.

The cries of Jacob
The sun was mid past High Point when Cora finished her shopping. She had stopped by the Tannery to see her husband and bring him some lunch before visiting the market. She used to love the market. The bright colored bolts of cloth, the garden fresh vegetables. Crafts and tools made by people you knew. Even the hand crafted leather goods her husband William had made. How the women would chatter about the heat or cold, and gossip. Oh could those women gossip. It was all light hearted, and for the most part in jest, that is until last year.

FedEx Home Delivery is a sub division of Ground, we focused primarily on residential deliveries while Ground took more of the business deliveries. Since we handled residential runs, we worked Tuesday through Saturday, so we could reach people at home for packages requiring a signature.

The Golden Ratio of Space Travel
Nobody can hear a scream in the vacuum of space, or so they say. I don’t know if that is supposed to be a warning, or our team motto. I’ve heard it said so many times in the past months I just grin anymore. Besides, where we are going nobody would be there to hear our screams anyways, at least, not that we know of. As the ship’s doctor and veteran of space travel to the orbiting International Space Station, I feel like I may be the most ignorant person sitting in this ship. The rest of our crew is waiting for us on the ISS above. Brilliant scientists from every field, each one with hopes and dreams of finding something revolutionary in their field.

Uncle Fred
The ride back was quiet. My normal comedic narratives seemed out of place, so I rode in silence. The black stretch limo was nice, but had an unhealthy feel to it. The smell of fabric spray, tweed suits and sweat assaulted my nose. I tried to remember the last time I rode in a limo, it was 10 years ago now, my 21st birthday. Some of my friends took me up to Windsor to the bars and casino that drew so many American tourists and their money across the bridge to Canada. Soon we arrived back at the funeral home and we helped our grandma out and got her into our dad’s car for the short ride back to her house.
