Much to atone for, to be sure
Yom Kippur is once again upon us — the day when religious Jews atone for their sins of the outgoing year. Secular Jews and gentiles might try a version of it as well, for it does not require God. A conscience is enough, the sinning is all over, and our hell may be on earth.

Lamenting the late, great letter
Does anyone still write letters? I used to, in lieu of a diary, which seemed uncool. When I had something to say, I would choose one of my dozen or so great friends and put inkjet to paper. I made efforts to compose with care, as for an article in today’s Times of Israel.

American politics have amounted to a two-party system for so long that most people can hardly imagine anything else. And while the world has been upended in many ways, in the United States Democrats and Republicans still slug it out as ever, with few switching sides. Elections are decided by tiny swings in a few competitive jurisdictions.

The world is full of people who call on others to be more rational. I should know — I’m one of them. But if they’re sports fans, such people should put their own house in order first. Upon reflection few of us, it seems, are quite as rational as we think.
