Virtue
Deep in the mountains I from time to time happen upon high lakes hidden in between rocky precipices fed from on high by melting glaciers or filled from below by sparkling underground springs. The waters are clear and cold. Though my intellect tells me better on warm summer days I sometimes hunker down to put my lips to the surface and drinking deeply my soul is quenched as much as is my thirst. The stillness of those mountain lakes makes me hungry for the raging sea.

Almost a Daughter
“Would you still like me if I wasn’t a girl?” Her voice was so low he wasn’t sure he heard right so rather than answering right off, he just stared at her. She tossed her head to one side, sable hair storming over her shoulders, glanced back at him for a quick second, clear eyes blue and penetrating, then turned away. Not a girl? Jordyn sure looked a girl. His body responded to her whenever she was close to him the same way it did all girls. That involuntary stiffening, the want, that indecent want, a clawing need. God Provides
Megan is up to her elbows in soapy grease-laden water as she listens to a man complaining rather more loudly than she thinks necessary about how Kathy has gotten his order wrong. Again, dammit. People having dinner pretend they don’t notice, but by their furtive glances toward Kathy then back at the angry old goat, Megan knows they do. About the same time the irate customer storms out the door, Kathy walks from behind the counter pencil and pad in hand to take the couple’s order who just came in and sat in a booth by the window.

Da Color of tha Sky
Naturally enough, nobody knows what to say, what to do next—on this night she has come to understand how those who really do believe in wonders rarely make much of a to-do when they are truly beheld—so and but then probably most think of the performance as likely some sort of hoax, a play of the light, a trick of the senses, perhaps even an elaborate mass hallucination induced by what must surely be the encouragement of a particularly vivid and unknowable hypnosis.

Renunciation
During the early summer of my life, I thought I might like to try and settle down. I desired a wife who would care for me in my old age and children to carry on my name after I passed away. I pretended that since I knew the ways of the world I could thereby make it a better place by altering my circumstances. I acted in ways expected of me. I acted out of a desire arising from my ego, not out of any sense of the heart. I thought by renouncing my wild ways I could become a good man.

Accepting Disgrace
When I first moved to this town on a day now long forgotten a well-meaning neighbor knocked on my door. When I answered it she asked if I would be interested in attending the weekly bible study at the local community center. I told her no as I shut the door in her face. She has never spoken to me since.

Big Shot
A cold wind blows in off the Pacific and the sun hasn’t shined all day. I wake up itchy in the dunes not at all sure how I got here though I seem to remember riding in the back of a rusty van drinking cheap booze with the members of a hair band who were traveling north to do a gig. At least my butt doesn’t hurt so I'm pretty certain they weren’t queers.

Knowing Myself
There is always someone trying to make me feel inferior by offering ways for me to improve. Of course, they do this without any expense to themselves. I call this the necessary monsters of ego-climbing but there is plenty of just plain meanness involved too.
