I thought my Mom was going to die and it made me sad
I’ve written a lot about my mom over the years. Some of it for laughs, some to enter a challenge (in fact my one achievement to the point of writing this article was a runner-up prize in the Mother’s Day Confessions challenge). I’ve written about my mom not having a great deal of empathy, how she showed more affection for a stray cat than her child, and several other pieces that didn’t always paint Mom in a great light.

The heartbreak that started it all
Recently I spoke with an ex-girlfriend who asked me why I had treated her the way I did when we were dating. I should clarify I never beat her, or gaslit her, I just wasn’t as present as I should have been, and I was probably way more casual about our relationship than she deserved. I admitted that a big part of that was my insecurities around my fear that at some point she’d figure she wanted someone more attractive than me, or richer than me, or just someone better than me in some regard.

Look, it’s not that far, we can walk. I assured Kristen that I could order an Uber to take us to the museum, but she was having none of it. It was payback for me forcing her to attend a tactical goods shop with me earlier in this business trip.

Did Billy Joel wait too long to turn the lights back on?
As a kid, one of the first songs I remember hearing on the radio and liking was Piano Man. I asked my Mom who sang that song, and she of course told me it was Neil Diamond. After years of hunting record stores for a Neil Diamond album with Piano Man on it, I finally found out my Mom knew nothing about music and subsequently located Billy Joel’s music instead.

Losing Jimmy Buffett feels like I've lost an old friend
Like most people, the news of Jimmy Buffett’s passing came a little out of the blue. I saw a post on social media and immediately picked up the phone and rang a friend, with whom I had bonded over Jimmy’s music some twenty years before. Last night I had a drink and played some Jimmy for my daughter.

Re-reading the message on her phone, Naomi couldn’t help but feel disappointed and annoyed. Even though she’d sent back “That’s ok, I understand”, she didn’t really. She knew that the risk of dating a married man meant that sometimes he’d have to cancel their plans, she still couldn’t understand how he could pass up a night with her.

Imagine if you will, the year is 1977. The top movie of the year is a science fiction movie, but it isn’t based in a galaxy far, far away. Instead, the events occur on Earth. It is not from an emerging filmmaker named George Lucas. The writer and director of this movie is Steven Spielberg, who had already enjoyed cinematic success with movies like Duel and Jaws.

When sharing a story can get you in trouble
I’m all for giving someone honest and direct feedback. I think if someone genuinely wants to improve, they need to know where they can do better. I try to stick by that behavior in most aspects of my life… except when it comes to my bosses. Unless they invite direct blunt feedback, and I know that they won’t make my life a misery if I give it to them, I usually just try not to rock the boat.
