At the Forest Clearing
Naked hiking in the woods after an evening of beer, swimming and chat hadn’t been on my bingo card for today, but here I was, following Pen and trying not to step on sharp objects. She led me along the path, head and shoulders just about visible as my eyes grew accustomed to the dark. Without the lantern it was very dark indeed beneath the canopy, but Pen moved with a quiet confidence I hadn’t expected from someone walking naked through a forest.

At the Swimming Pond
There’s a large pond in a forest near my parents’ house. All the local kids used to meet there to swim and socialise, when we were growing up. At first we went only when accompanied by adults but as we grew up we got bolder. In our mid to late teens we started going at night, and eventually we’d bathe naked in the moonlight, all trying to sneak peeks at our crushes and giggling over who was snogging instead of swimming. It became a favourite spot for a hook-up and, in the summer before university, everyone used the water or the banks for some al fresco sexual exploration. By some margin, it was the most popular local meeting spot until we all discovered pubs and nightclubs, and even then my group of friends would return in the holidays and splash through the shallows to lounge in the cool waters in the middle of the pond.

Ever since the pandemic I’d been working remotely. At first I worked from home on a small desk in the cramped hallway of my tiny flat. As soon as the lockdown restrictions were lifted, I moved to a shared table in my local co-working space so I could enjoy at least a little human contact.

It had been a long day. I teach sports to disinterested teens at a Greater London school, and it’s hard work. Today, I’d spent two hours coaching the rugby team after the end of the normal school day, then another thirty minutes tidying up the mess. Now, as the time ticked toward seven o’clock, I decided to hit the showers before heading home.

Let me set the scene. Two couples, mid twenties, on holiday at a rented cottage in the countryside. This was our third group holiday, and after two years at resorts in Tenerife, we’d decided to try somewhere closer to home, which is how we came to be spending a week in a remote corner of Wales.

Clare and I agreed that we’d try subterfuge to manufacture a friendly introduction to Jenny. After she’d caught us fucking like rabbits on the landing, we didn’t think she’d be keen to talk, so we needed a tactful approach that wouldn’t scare her away, especially if we hoped to entice her into bed. I’d said hello to her a dozen times or more since she’d moved into the block a few months ago, but we’d never spoken more than to comment on the weather or complain about the peeling paint on the stairs or the broken elevator. This was hardly a solid basis for an in-depth discussion of our most intimate secrets, but Clare and I had talked it over and we had a plan.

I hadn’t seen Clare for a couple of days by the time she next appeared at my front door. This time she was – disappointingly, if unsurprisingly – fully clothed. The flat across the hall from mine on the top floor of my building had been empty only a few hours when the builders arrived. It was a big project, as far as I could tell from the noise, the dust, and the amount of stuff that came up to the top floor of our five-storey block in the miniature lift. After a month of work, the flat had new floors, new paint, new kitchen, air-conditioning, and two new bathrooms. In other words, a complete refurb.

Sex is about the most popular entertainment activity in a hotel. This is hardly surprising. Guests arrive as couples planning to screw each other, or as singles to pick up dates or screw the staff. Long-Distance Hike, Chapter 5
ManEater seemed unusually quiet as we left Inveroran. For much of the morning she walked alone, either at the front of the group or the rear, avoiding contact with everyone but especially with me. By the time we reached Kinlochlevan and checked into the hostel where we would spend the night, she was almost entirely withdrawn. She didn’t say much during dinner, and the atmosphere cooled as the rest of the group picked up on her discomfort.
