The Birchfield Building Cellar. Top Story - October 2024.
There was only one rule: don’t open the door. No matter how loud the knocking became, mother said to never give in to my curiosity. That part of the estate was restricted and mother warned that my existence on earth depended on keeping a great distance away from the Birchfield Building cellar.

Unknown Visitor
The room smelled of lavender and the cool glow from the TV rested on my closed eyes. As my fiancé and I lay on the pullout sofa within our living room, I awoke to a strange rustling in the kitchen. Slowly opening my eyes to look into the adjacent kitchen, I could not comprehend what I was seeing. An inhumanly tall creature with pale smooth skin stood in the center. A horrifying face with no eyes was turned toward us with a smiling red mouth full of large, jagged teeth. With its long-extended fingers, it slowly began to crawl towards us, leaving no sound as it inched across the room. The scream gurgling in my throat would not release. I realized the creature had somehow paralyzed us, with only my eyes able to move. As it crawled over my legs, its skin felt scaly and cold. Its sneer released a hissing laugh as it hovered over my fiancé’s unconscious body.

The Elephant. Content Warning.
A pit of shame welled up inside Dillon. He already knew how his parents would react to the news, but this wasn’t something that he could keep from them. Bracing himself, he went to the kitchen to find his mother first. Mrs. Berenger was getting the sauce ready for her husband’s favorite gator ribs before the start of the game.

Grass and Concrete
A flock of turkeys shambled their way across Circle Boulevard; their collective song piercing the morning silence as the sun cut away the darkness. They patrolled each yard they passed on the hunt for worms that surfaced for air or flowers that persevered through the first chill of fall. Cars gradually exited their driveways and patiently waited for a clear path. By mid-morning, the birds began their retreat into the forest and the fox that had been watching slowly followed.

The Tower of Cormalfin
Pop sprang up the stairs with the fervor of a man a hundred years younger. Each alabaster step was lined with gold and studded with precious gems. On the walls of the tower were murals emblazoned with vibrant colors. There were warriors fighting vicious beasts, noblemen dressed in purple gowns with white frills, and portraits of what must have been the Builders. Children frolicked through the forest. Massive ships sailed up the Apsinro river. Pop had never seen such a beautiful display of art and history.
