Home Opener Sweet Home Opener
Home openers are always special; the first time that a team plays in front of their hometown crowd in the new season is always a huge deal. In the NHL, a team plays 41 games in front of their home crowd. For the Colorado Avalanche, this is our first. Following a big 4-1 win in Los Angeles, the Avs, for the 30th time, took the ice at home, and in this instance, it was against our neighbors to the west, the Utah Mammoth. Yes, Utah's team finally has a name.

What Went Wrong: 22 Days Early
This is going to be a long offseason. We Yankees fans love to play the game of "What if" when we come up short. We didn't really play it too much last year because we were in the Fall Classic. That was an emotional October for me. When Juan Soto hit that home run in Cleveland last year, I was bouncing all over the walls. It had been 15 years since we even played in the World Series, and here we were, playing in the Fall Classic. Even better for this baseball fan, it was Yankees/Dodgers. We didn't win, but we got there. That's the thing.

NFL Week 5 Recap: Popping the Champagne Early
It's always fun when a league enters a new month. MLB in October means postseason and the road to a championship. October means the beginning in the NBA and NHL. Even in the Canadian Football League, October is the home stretch. In the NFL, October starts the end of the "it's early" talks. While it's still too early to panic, it's a tad too late to take things for granted. Don't believe me? Ask the Buffalo Bills and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Year 30 Begins!
30 years. Hard to believe that it's been 30 years since the Quebec Nordiques moved to Denver and became the Colorado Avalanche. I was 10 years old when the move happened. I was in the fifth grade when that season started, and it ended with the first of three Stanley Cups won. Now, here it is, Year #30. Year #29, despite it being Nathan MacKinnon's number, did not end well for us. It didn't start well for us either. An 0-4 start that saw us go through a lot of players--49 of them, to be exact.

"Beyond the Gates" Week 29 & 30 Review
Beyond the Gates has now aired on CBS for just over seven months, and we've seen so much in that little time. We've see love triangles, love quadrangles, deep secrets, family loyalty, dark betrayals, explosive moments, you name it, we've seen it. As I've said many times in many recaps, this was the very thing that the soap opera genre badly needed--and I'm not just saying that because of the massive representation displayed, but it's definitely one of the top reasons.

2025 Division Series Preview
It was 30 years ago that the Division Series was officially introduced into Major League Baseball; originally, we were supposed to get this in 1994, but the strike killed the rest of the season and the postseason. 1995 was the first official season for the Division Series, which served as the postseason's opening round until the introduction the Wild Card Game in 2012. The Division Series currently serves as the second round and introduces the teams who received byes and avoided the Wild Card Series. In addition, it increases the margin of error, as the Division Series is played under a best-of-five format.

CFL Week 17 Recap: Don't Mess With Success
We need to talk. I didn't address this in my Week 16 recap, but I have to now. It's old news, but it's still fresh. As the saying goes, "There'll be some changes made." Very stupid ones. CFL Commissioner Stewart Johnston announced that a number of rule changes will be made to the league we all love, and they will take place during the next two seasons. Let's start chronologically, shall we?

What Went Wrong: We Still Own You, Boston. Top Story - October 2025.
A familiar saying comes to mind in this case: "The more things change, the more they stay the same." First off, let's talk about the fact that this was the best Wild Card Series round ever. Yes, we're only four seasons in to this format, but still. In the first three years, there were 12 series. Only two went the maximum three games: Mets/Padres in 2022, and Brewers/Mets in 2024. This year saw three deciding Game Threes, and the last one was between the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees.

What Went Wrong: How Do You Not Win the NL West?!
A lot of things happened when MLB changed the postseason format and added a second Wild Card team in each league back in 2012. One of them was that the emphasis on winning the division increased vastly. Before, each league's four playoff teams were on equal ground. When the second Wild Card was added, it allowed all of the division champions to take a bit of a breather while the two Wild Cards faced each other. Since 2022, it's only the top two division champions who get the byes, and while the #3 seed does have to play in the Wild Card Series, at least they'd get that series at home.

What Went Wrong: Unlucky 77
How the American League Central was won in 2025 will definitely be the latest of a long, long list of amazing tales in baseball history. Much like their National League counterparts in the southern end of Ohio, the Cleveland Guardians were an afterthought. Not only were they 10.5 games out entering September, they were in third place! The Guardians exploded in September, capitalizing on the freefalling of the Detroit Tigers and moving into a position for them to easily clinch the AL Central. They did just that in Game 162 when the Tigers lost prior to Cleveland's game finishing.

Reds 1st Team Eliminated, but They Have a Lot to Be Proud Of
On the first day of October, four teams looked to stay alive and avoid elimination. Three teams did so, leaving the Cincinnati Reds to complete the sweep. They did strike first in Game Two of their National League Wild Card Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers, plating two against, of all pitchers, Yoshinobu Yamamoto. However, again, the Dodgers were just too much for them. An 8-4 loss to the Dodgers, and just like that, the Reds' season was over.

NFL Week 4 Recap: They're Back, Baby?!
Have the rumors of the Kansas City Chiefs' demise been greatly exaggerated? When the Chiefs started 0-2, we all celebrated. We said it was over. Their next game was the Giants; we knew they'd win that one, but even so, Baltimore was next. I was immensely confident that the Ravens would beat down the Chiefs. So the game was at Arrowhead. In my view, all that meant was that the Chiefs would lose by two touchdowns instead of three. Then, I watched Baltimore's game against the Lions. My goodness. Granted, the Lions are good enough to tap dance all over opposing defenses, but there's that and there's what I saw to end Week 3. That entire game totally siphoned away all of my confidence in Baltimore in Week 4.
