  • Insomniac’s Spider-Man Shouldn’t Have Surprised Me

    When Insomniac studios revealed they were making a Spider-Man ps4 game I was excited but surprised. I was confident they would make a great game but them making a Spider-man game was something I would have never predicted. In hindsight, thinking about insomniac’s history makes Spider-Man seem like an extension on a lot of concepts they’ve used within their previous works. Specifically my favourite Insomniac series Ratchet & Clank.

  • Infamous Deserves A Better Send-Off

    Ghost of Tsushima is one of the most anticipated games of 2020 yet I’m still hoping for another game in the infamous series. While I enjoyed infamous second son and seem to be biased towards all super hero media, I have issues with parts of it. Infamous second son was followed by a shorter spinoff game called infamous first light but would like to see at least one more full length infamous game right some of the miss-steps of second son.

  • Wander: A One of a Kind Character

    For a game I haven’t played in years, I think about Shadow of the Colossus a lot. Shadow of the Colossus gets nearly universal praise for its story, gameplay and visual style. However, I don’t think its main character gets enough attention, even if part of what makes Wander great is the story he’s involved in.

  • 2017 Was a Classic Year for Movies

    Sometimes the way we perceive art can change over time. Creative works can be praised when they are released but then forgotten or be less appreciated in years to come. With that said, I don’t think it’s too soon to say that 2017 was an incredible year for film. Every year will have some films that are disappointments, but 2017 had many amazing standalone, series starting and sequel films.

  • My Hopes for Rey

    Her Lineage With title being The Rise of Skywalker it’s safe to say Episode 9 will revolve around members of the Skywalker family or their legacy being carried on by their apprentices. I also would not be surprised if Rey turns out to secretly be a Skywalker. However, since seeing The Force Awakens, I have suspected and hoped that Rey was a descendant of Qui-Gon Jinn. For starters I think it would be boring if 9 movies spanning nearly 70 fictional years and over 40 real years revolve around one family. Therefore I’d prefer Rey to be anyone but a Skywalker but her being related to Qui-Gon Jinn is my first choice. The first and most obvious reason is because their long dark hair and the robes they wear make them look similar. Secondly I think this could also work from a story perspective as Qui-Gon Jinn was known to be a somewhat controversial Jedi who often disagreed with the Jedi council. So even if Jedi were forbidden to marry, it wouldn’t have been out of character for Qui-Gon Jinn to start a family in secret. This would lead to Rey’s humble beginnings and would explain why Kylo Ren believed Rey’s family was unimportant. Finally having Qui-Gon as her ancestor would be interesting as he is one of the few popular Jedi to only appear in one live action film. Plus 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of his first appearance so it would be nicely timed.

  • My Issues with The Mad Queen

    The final season of Game of Thrones has been disappointing and with one episode left, it is hard to imagine the finale will do enough to win over frustrated fans. However, even if season eight has been weaker than previous seasons, it is still some of the best TV to watch right now. That being said, I’ve had issues with parts of this season, especially with Daenerys becoming “the mad queen.” I’m obviously not the first to have this view but I’d like to explain it considering my expectations going in to season 8, Daenerys’ character history and the timing of her becoming a villain.

  • 'The Dark Tower' and the 'Darkest Dungeon'. Top Story - December 2018.

    Now that I’m no longer in university, I am reading for fun for the first time in years. I started with The Gunslinger by Stephen King, the first book of his Dark Tower series. I’ve now read through The Drawing of Three and have begun The Wastelands. On the other hand, I have been playing Darkest Dungeon, and while both the novels and the game are great so far individually, pairing these things together has been an even greater experience.

  • The MCU Should Focus on Personal Stories After Endgame

    As a superhero fan since childhood, I would have never thought superhero films would become as popular as they are today. Superhero films have gone from occasional movies for a niche audience to enjoy having consistently successful releases several times a year. No franchise embodies this more than the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I have found the MCU movies repetitive at times but consistently enjoyable. With Avengers Endgame looking like it will be the biggest film in the franchise yet, I’d like to see Marvel take a break from Avengers and crossovers in the next batch of films.

  • Is White Washing Ever Excusable?

    Western entertainment media is feeling more and more pressure to be more diverse in ethnicity than it has been for decades. For the most part I’m behind this notion as it’s important that acting talent is recognized regardless of ethnicity and because seeing ones culture represented in media as more than just stereotypes is significant for marginalized groups. However I’m curious if there’s a scenario when having a white actor play a non-white character is ever okay. I think it’s safe to say that it’s not okay for a white person to play a character in a film who isn’t white. I’m more torn on if it’s ever okay to change the ethnicity of a character to white when a film is based on pre-existing characters. For this I would like to consider the live action version of Ghost in the Shell. There was criticism when white actress Scarlet Johansson was cast as the protagonist despite her character being Japanese in the anime. This adaptation was poorly received commercially and critically, but I think it’s worth discussing for this topic. As I mentioned some people were critical of the film’s race swapping, but I think this scenario is more complex than most for a few reasons.

    Unsurprisingly it has just been confirmed that Ryan Coogler will return to write and direct a second Black Panther film. So I thought I’d write about some of the things I’d like to in this highly anticipated sequel.
