On Diagnosis and Change
My childhood was a mixed bag. I mostly have early memories of living in unsavory conditions and of repeated abuse at the hands of my biological father, but I also remember my mother’s marriage to my step-father, moving into a beautiful house, and my family suddenly having money. We travelled a lot. My siblings and I got left behind in a lot of Las Vegas hotel suites while our parents gambled and partied and their friends picked fights with WWE wrestlers. That last part isn’t important, but it’s a fun little tidbit. Their friend was fine, if you don’t count the broken nose.

No Resolutions
I didn’t have any resolutions polished and ready to go in the beginning of 2021. In fact, I distinctly remember sometime between Christmas and New Year’s Eve, sitting drunk on my couch with my fiancée, slurring something along the lines of “It doesn’t even matter, right? The world’s, like, fucked anyway - I’m gonna be easy on myself next year.” We had planned on marrying in 2020, and buying a house, and I was due for a raise. See, I’d had a stable job that I loved, which went under as soon as Covid19 hit. We lost our savings before we could even blink, and everything continued going south from that point on. So, I’d be nicer to myself next year; more forgiving of my shortcomings.

Adult Diagnosis
An autism diagnosis that comes during adulthood can really re-contextualize an entire life’s worth of events, behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Even the phrase “autistic adult” can often summon imagery of childhood, or child-like behaviors in many - an overall ableist view of autistic adults that many of us internalize ourselves, whether we realize it or not. Rarely are there resources targeted towards autistic adults, and even more rare that those sparse resources address autistic adults as fully fledged human beings with their own wants, feelings, and will. Mostly, when an autistic adult wants to look into their own neurodiversity and explore symptoms and signs, they must first wade through article after article geared towards the parents of autistic children, and even of those, many lament the poor, unfortunate situation these parents are in - having an autistic child. The disabled in question are rarely given agency.
