Determined to Thrive
I stare through the frost-covered glass at the blanket covering my young pear tree, whispering a prayer to a deity I’m no longer sure I believe in. The tree has only been in the ground for a few months but I thought I had done the right thing by planting it in the earth, though now I wonder if that was a mistake because it’s firmly rooted out there, trapped in the cold with no way for me to bring it inside.

Fighting for Absolution
Tilly kept her head turned away from the man in front of her. With the tattered, dirty clumps of her hair hanging around her face, she had a bit of a shield against the tantalizing smell of warm chocolate, but the mild stench of soiled hair could hardly block out the decadent aroma of freshly baked cake. It didn’t matter. She wouldn’t give him the pleasure of seeing how affected she was by this act. Mind games were never a thing she’d taken interest in, so she had no idea if her act of defiance would make a difference, but she still refused to broadcast how painfully hungry she was by staring at the cake being consumed dramatically by the Arbiter.

Fighting for Absolution
A building sob of relief threatened to choke Tilly when the barn came into view. She had finally found the place shown in her vision, and the promise of refuge sent renewed energy into her aching muscles, helping her legs to move a little faster as she ran. She could only hope the flames that had engulfed the dilapidated structure in her vision hadn’t been a bad omen.

Reclamation
Warm hands woke me from the slumber that bound me. How much time had elapsed since I coalesced into this form? Months? Decades? The sands of time flowed beyond my reach, close enough to remind me I was cut off from the corporeal world but too far away to affect me.
