False Spring. Content Warning.
Two cardinals and a small flock of house sparrows were the first to celebrate the arrival of spring on Wednesday morning. The sun was shining and rattling bikes scooted over cobblestone streets. Dogs and their people met at the corners without their winter jackets. The biting cold had passed and the buzz of warmth was in the air. Beer mugs and plates clanked at corner cafes like windchimes, and windows were opened to blow winter’s dust through the back door.

I Want To Fly
The storm hammered at the bathroom skylight, lifting sheet metal with each gust of wind. Rain slanted across the windows of the house like a driving cloudburst in a speeding car. On the main floor wind whistled through an open window. A steady flow of water from the storm puddled inside on the painted wood and reached the edge in a thin line. It collected at the precipice of the window sill, bulging over the edge. Water breached the corner, and the over-sized droplet splattered on the tile floor below. One drop quickly became two, and the pace increased for hours as the rain intensified.

Hunter
Birch The boy stepped through lit trees and cast shadows and his boots made a familiar thud with each step. The treads of his boots were heavy and supported his ankles with stiff leather uppers. The annual fall of leaves and the ensuing decomposing thatch created layers and pockets of air, making the impact of his steps resonate like a slow drum beat. All around, the patchwork of flaky white bark of the birch trees stood like tall skinny pillars of light dotting their way across the brown earth. The Birchwood Forest glimmered in the morning sun as low clouds crept in over the treetops. Light sneaked through from the east and the shallow slanted rays of morning light complimented the chill in the air as it hit the muted forest floor.
