A Dragon’s Heart, Burning Bright
The shadows appeared deeper and darker the further into the forest he wandered. The fading light of day was giving way to the muted shades of twilight, draping the forest depths beneath a veil of shadow. Gone were the shafts of sunlight which had pushed their way through the canopy above. The beams which had once helped to illuminate the space had grown fainter and fainter, until all that remained was the distant glimmer of starlight, glimpsed fleetingly through the thick crowns of the trees.

“Tickets please.” The call roused Eli from his slumber. There was no telling how long he’d been asleep for; all he knew was that it must’ve been a particularly deep and restful one. His eyelids felt weighted, proving to be an effort to prise them open. Groggily, he tried to blink the haze of sleep from his eyes.

In the Depths of Darkness. Runner-Up in Campfire Ghost Story Challenge.
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. My brother, sister and I would often come to camp in these woods. We had our favourite clearing amongst the trees to pitch our tents, far enough from the beaten track to feel remote and removed from civilisation. It’d been our regular haunt every summer as kids, when our father used to take us up there on fishing trips.
