Let's talk frankly for a minute. When many of us writers first dreamt of "being a writer" what we saw in our fantasies was probably something glamorous: a clambering agent, a traditionally published book, and perhaps even a red carpet debut for the movie adaptation of our bestseller. Very few of us initially imagined the perhaps less-glamorous world of self-publishing.

Love: From the Perspective of the Unromantic. Top Story - March 2024.
When reduced down to stereotypes, I've noticed that there is a harsh gender line regarding experiences of love and romance. Women are expected to have a stronger connection to and capacity for love. Love seems to play a more central role in a woman's expected life's narrative (i.e., fall in love, get married, have children). For men, love seems more often regarded as a secondary aspect to the narrative (i.e., achieve an aspiration, secure a wife along the way). I think this is part of the reason why girlhood gets lumped with romanticism in a way that boyhood never seems to be.

Over two hundred dead bodies litter the peak of Mount Everest - and although this is my seventeenth climb, I still pause to honor these souls turned frozen guideposts. Most of my clients' eyes tend to glaze over after the first body. Sometimes they will even take a picture, looking at the corpse before them with the indifference of photographing a mildly interesting bug.

The Unequal Marriage (1862) by Vasili Vladimirovich Pukirev is a Realism work of art, which depicts the inequalities in marriage arrangements of the time. The painting depicts inequalities of age and wealth, as a young girl from an impoverished background is arranged to be married to a rich, old man. The painting was wildly praised for both it's skill and how it handled a controversial, yet important topic of older, affluent men taking younger women (sometimes children) as their next wife.
