How Gargoyles Inspired Me
A thousand years ago, superstition and the sword ruled, and not much has changed if you watch any kind of mainstream media. Back in the 90s, Gargoyles was the pinnacle of Disney TV, especially for shows that didn’t insult the intelligence of children. It had drama, magic awakening in a pre-cyberpunk world, and creatures that were stone by day, but warriors by night. The three main things Gargoyles instilled into me were that your family can be anything, transcending race or even species; more inspiration to study science, technology, and even specifically physics as it pertained to magic (even their magic was semi-based in physics); and in the later part of the second season, like Johnny Quest, it instilled me with a desire to travel the world studying culture and metaphysics.

How Jonny Quest Inspired Me
Jonny Quest in the 90s had a couple of different titles, “New Adventures of” or “Real Adventures of” depending on the season and where you lived on Earth, so here I’ll just be referring to it as Jonny Quest and assume I’m discussing the 90’s show. Despite the 2 seasons being very different shows in regards to demographic focus, they both had the same main plots; Scientist dude and his action hero BFF take their kids around the world solving mysteries and fighting monsters and villains of all sorts. It sort of borrowed a lot from the X-Files craze in that regard and helped pave the way for other shows of its type such as the early seasons of Supernatural, Roswell: Aliens, Myths, and Legends, and numerous ghost and paranormal hunter type reality shows and documentaries.

How Batman: The Animated Series Inspired Me
I feel pretty comfortable saying that everyone on the planet Earth knows who Batman is and the basics of his life story. Rich kid, parents killed in front of him in an alley, grows up training all his life to be the ultimate badass, dons a suit of high-tech armored pajamas, and punches out his issues in the face every night. Mostly does good for the world as a whole. I was (and still am, to an arguably lesser degree) obsessed with this show and all its follow up iterations. It inspired my life I think in many ways, but for this essay I’ll cover the top three. My sense of rightness and justice, my love of science, and my spirit of adventure.

TV Shows From My Youth That Inspired Me
Everyone gets inspiration from things as a child. Comics, TV, movies; these are all things that inspire, or have inspired, pretty much everyone in the first world. Who doesn’t want to grow up to be Spider-Man, or Superman, or one of the X-Men? And many such comics have/had TV shows and movies to go with them.

The Time I Saw a Demon Boar
My daughter is always bugging me to tell and re-tell the adventure stories of my life, especially the scary or paranormal ones. Since it’s nearing Halloween I figured I’d give it a shot and write down one of my old favorites; the time my friends and I encountered what looked like the giant demon boar god from the Japanese anime movie Princess Mononoke.
