The Watcher of the Kingdom
Alana is my favourite babysitter. She’s not like the other babysitters who talk down to me and want me to quietly watch a movie. She actually plays with me. And she is so much fun! I think it’s because she’s an only child, like me. When you’re alone all the time, you get really good at using your imagination, which makes it even more exciting when you finally have someone to play with.

What I Wish I'd Said
My shoulder was already hurting from the pull of the suitcase but I was only halfway to the bus station. I did my best to ignore the jerk and tug as the wheels got caught in the cracks of the sidewalk and focused instead on the beautiful day and moving forward. I kept my head down for the most part, but every once and awhile would look into the window of an interesting shop, check for traffic before crossing a street, make sure a passing car wasn’t honking at me, as well as lift my face to feel the sun.

"For Those Wishing to Escape"
The three women had been friends since grade school, supporting each other through the awkward years of puberty, the daunting unknown of graduation, and the strains of adulthood. Less than a year ago, they all would have said they could trust their childhood friends with anything, but they were barely into their mid-twenties and each of them had made mistakes that brought so much shame and guilt, they hadn’t been able to share with anyone. The obvious tragedies that had befallen each of them, Heather’s unprecedented divorce, the death of Paige’s brother and the loss of Sydney’s business, made the suggestion of a cabin getaway seem more than warranted. The idea evoked a fear in them as well though. They worried their closest friends would see through their facades, glimpse the rotting secrets within and turn away in disgust.

Take a moment and think of your three favourite activities. Is it cooking? A sport? Reading? Gaming? Now, imagine you wake up tomorrow and your dominant hand no longer functions. Can you still do your favourite activities? Odds are likely that you need two hands to engage in at least one, if not all, of the activities that you listed. A more important question, can you still do your necessary activities with only one hand, like getting dressed, feeding yourself, using the toilet, or showering? How do you think you would feel if you suddenly needed help with all of these activities?

The miniature statue of a bull had sat on top of Jack’s desk in his home office for a little over a year. Despite previously decorating the offices of one defense attorney and two politicians, the bull felt that Jack somehow managed to be the biggest asshole of them all. It was unclear what Jack did for a living but it definitely involved money, and money changes people.

I Will Write
Surprise, surprise! A contest requests that I write about something I’m passionate about and I choose to write about writing. How original! However, it’s the truth. Whenever I manage to write something that flows and clearly conveys my ideas, I feel a release; like I was holding my breath for an extended period and I finally let it out.

Chocolate Travels
The suburbs would have normally been a decent hunting ground for the Chocolate Monster, but times were tough. There were no kids running around, no family picnics being had, and no birthdays being celebrated. The Chocolate Monster dragged itself across a perfectly manicured lawn under the beating sun, convinced that if it did not find some chocolate soon, it would see the sun set but it wouldn’t see it rise.
