'Let Me Tell You Where the Evil Is.'
I think when one understands the nature of horror, and experiences it for themselves in one way or another, as there are horrific elements regarding just about anything and everything in real life, you understand the subtle and not so subtle truths and metaphors for very real social issues contained with the horror film genre. Although, this line of thought can't always be applied when happy and 'excited' teenagers are butchered in horror movies. As Carpenter says in the video, these films work so well, and will continue to, because they touch on not only the external darkness, the other tribe as it were, but also the darkness lingering just beneath the surface, inside of us. The hulking lumbering force of nature in a mask wielding a knife, chainsaw, or machete, while terrifying enough, can be defeated or avoided. But who can deny an evil that has latched itself inside a person?

Disappointed! (When a Franchise Becomes Too Popular)
I can’t help but feel excited any time a new Star Wars film arrives. Even if it turns out to be mediocre to say the least, any time the opening crawl appears with that iconic music from John Williams, it’s exciting. Perhaps it’s a symptom of the division in our society, but the most recent film garnered a shocking and frankly rather extreme reaction. I’m sure you read the reactions and reviews by now, and you either love it intensely, or you had such a visceral reaction the very thought of it almost gives you a coronary. However, this article isn’t about how good or how bad the last Star Wars film was.

The Thanksgiving Rock Throwing Incident
Okay, let me state first that the following story was quite true so I changed some names around. Though I have to admit I'm better remembering details than names, so I should be covered. This was Thanksgiving 2001. It ended up being the last one I'd spend at my grandmother's house, as she would pass on that next April. As usual, there was a lot of family present.

They Live
Classic horror literature and its many inspirations, rip-offs, and retelling's, came from very real sources and sometimes have a way of being a sort of social commentary. Characters like Dracula, Frankenstein, the zombie, and The Wolfman, though they're way beyond what's naturally possible, have a way of being perfect characterizations of humanity at its worst, or its most tragic. This is why in more ways than one, the horror genre, much like comedy, can tell certain truths we'd rather avoid about ourselves and the world around us. Monsters like vampires, werewolves, and science experiments gone wrong bound inside books, movies, or shows. They live and walk among us.

Gollum: A Warning to Us All
As many of you know from The Lord of The Rings franchise, a gangling creature named Gollum, former owner of the McGuffin of the story, the ring of power, wasn't always the way he was. I'm sure I'm going to butcher the plot in one way or another, but from Gollum's history we find out he was once a simple-living, nature loving-creature closely related to hobbits, once named Sméagol, whose biggest concern as he went fishing with his cousin Déagol on his birthday was likely what type of beer would pair well with their catch. Déagol gets a strike and as he's about to pull it in, he himself is pulled into the water. The One Ring of Power is discovered for the first time in some thousands of years later after its last owner, King Isildur from Gondor, becoming possessed by the ring's will almost the second he saw it, refused an order to destroy it in the fires of Mount Doom, and was later ambushed and killed by a company of orcs .
