“The nervous system is made up of neurons, specialized cells that can receive and transmit chemical or electrical signals, and glia, cells that provide support functions for the neurons. A neuron can be compared to an electrical wire: it transmits a signal from one place to another. Glia can be compared to the workers at the electric company who make sure wires go to the right places, maintain the wires, and take down wires that are broken. Recent evidence suggests that glia may also assist in some of the signaling functions of neurons.”

STEVE: Hunt 9
Steve sat in his vintage Firebird, parked across the street from the warehouse. He stared at it through the windshield and cracked his knuckles again on the steering wheel. For the first time since he’d started this gig, he felt a flutter of nerves in his gut. He looked down at the crumpled piece of paper on his passenger seat.

Steve: Hunt 1, The Hatefiend
The silver cube had been sitting next to Steve’s couch for two weeks now. Polished to a mirror sheen and with no visible openings, it looked like a bad piece of modern art. Or maybe a good piece of modern art. Steve wasn’t much of an art guy. He reached into the mini-fridge he kept on the other side of the couch — a much more useful box than the one he was currently staring at — and popped the top on a cold beer. He took a long sip and stared down the mystery cube, going over how he’d come to be in possession of it for the thousandth time.

The Kestrel and the Willow
“There weren’t always dragons in the Valley.” The voice of Alder Grannick cut like steel, holding the crowd transfixed. His eyes swept slowly over the people in front of him as he spoke, reveling in their adoration. He continued, “You worked. You scraped. You fought. You earned every inch of this land through sweat and blood.” Enthusiastic murmurs of assent washed through the hundreds of people gathered around the stage, and I did my best not to roll my eyes. “And then...together…” he continued, throwing his arms out wide, “...we conquered nature itself!”

Scion
38 carefully wrapped the two shorn branches together with a clear sheet, her fingers deftly weaving around them with practiced precision. The trick was to bind them tight enough that the two stalks wouldn’t become dislodged, even if the ship’s artificial gravity had one of its occasional hiccups. She took a step back to admire her work. The roots of certain plants handled the rigors of interstellar travel better than others, and 38 had found that by grafting two different species together she could ensure the survival of some of the more fragile specimens in her care.
