RUTO'S CABINET
Kenya’s most unprecedented protests dubbed ‘Gen Z Protest’ has resulted to the most unpredictable changes in President William Ruto’s government, the most recent one being firing of the cabinet ministers. On Friday, July 19, 2024, Ruto addressed changes in his cabinet in a press briefing after a deep reflection on the relationship between fundamental rights and Democratic freedoms ‘Our collective aspirations for prosperity and efforts to secure opportunities for all and the imperative to advance national sovereignty and the security of the state in this course, the people of Kenya have expressed their views on governance development, economic management, national finances and many other aspects of our nationhood’.

ACK CHURCH TO GEN Z
To reduce its huge debt burden, the Kenyan Government proposed a finance bill that sparked widespread demonstrations led by young Genz. The protesters feared that the bill would’ve added to the economic hardships of people already gripped by a cost of living crisis. The young generation is now driving the conversation and action for change across the country.

A MISS OR A HIT
Kenyans are struggling to come to terms with the damage inflicted on their businesses among other sources of income countrywide following the anti-government protests, accompanied by some vandalism and looting. This pressure forced president William Ruto to withdraw his support for the finance bill complicating the efforts to tackle Kenya's heavy debt burden public borrowing which is 68% of GDP higher than the 55% recommended by the World Bank and the IMF. The IMF has however urged Kenya to meet revenue targets to access more funding.
