The Life I Have
Some people like to carelessly throw around the phrase “life can change in an instant.” For me, it was around forty-five seconds; nearly a minute of holding my breath until the pale, sterile walls of the doctor’s office started to soak up the remnants of my hopes and dreams.

As she carefully slid onto the tall, swiveling bar stool, Renee admired the overall design of the backdrop. The liquor was stacked high on mahogany shelving units accented by dim lights underneath. Between the columns of varied glass bottles were tall mirrors framed by wood in an antique-looking pattern.

The Final Goodbye
The rusted red paint on the old barn appeared faded beyond its years. The sky, too, devoid of any cheery brightness, shrouded the immediate landscape in a solemn bleakness, as if even the inanimate objects and elemental forces were mourning the death of the proprietor of the farm, Nicki’s grandfather.
