One day I was living life–at the peak of my career, sweating it off at my orange theory classes, loving my independence while I traveled and enjoyed the company of friends and family. I was in the light and suddenly the switch was flipped. I was not prepared for the darkness that surrounded me. I fell to my knees while I gasped for air as this unknown entity tried to take over my body.

The Day It Rained Red
I will not forget this day — January 26, 1983. Nigeria, Africa. The sound of the horns is distant — sad and low as the rain beats against our hut and the canopy that surrounds us. With each growing second, the brassy and quick toots become louder growing to a crescendo that awakens my stiff body from sleep. What is happening?

Escape
Think about the moments in your life when you have felt the need to escape–to mentally run away and enter a space both physically and mentally that is soothing. A place that feels like your feet are barely touching the ground and the air feels so much cleaner. When all the colors around you now appear so vivid that it catches you off guard because you can't remember the last time dark clouds didn't hang over you. This is a poem about what it can feel like when your desire for freedom–that journey to a happier place is all you can think about. You are fighting for that chance.
