Everyone in Willow Creek remembered the day Elias left. It wasn’t dramatic. No thunderstorm, no angry goodbye, no slammed doors. It was a Sunday. The church bells had just rung for noon, and Mrs. Hadley’s lemon pie was cooling on her window sill. Elias, wearing an old flannel shirt and carrying a leather satchel, simply walked down Sycamore Lane and kept going.
