The year was 1912 in Southampton, England. My family was considered lower class because instead of having servants, we were the servants. Other girls my age were married whilst I worked to help my father afford to feed my seven siblings. My mother couldn’t work as she was gravely ill. She had a severe case of pneumonia. We weren’t able to afford her medication so we kept her as comfortable as we could. Father worked constantly to make and shine shoes. He rarely slept and forgot to eat most days. He always swore that once we were out of debt he would start saving to pay for my mothers medication. As far as I know, that day never came.

Thank You
To Whom This May Concern, There are several people that I should thank for the way I turned out. Most importantly, though, I need to thank my mom. My mom has always been a strong woman for as long as I can remember. She has had her weak moments like any human but she always got up, dusted herself off, and moved forward gracefully.

2022: A New Mindset. Runner-Up in We Have a Dream Challenge.
Hello. My name is Alexis. I am not one to share much about myself, but I will. I am 23 years old and have two small children. Writing is not only a hobby for me but a passion for me as well. The last several years have been difficult for me in terms of financial stability and toxic relationships but that hasn’t stopped me from pushing myself to do better. Especially for the people surrounding me.

Victoria walked into my room with a glass of juice and a biscuit on a small porcelain plate. I had barely eaten since leaving my parents home because of my nerves. I was terrified. The moment I woke up, I felt nauseated because of the dreams I had. I looked over at Victoria as she rummaged through my closet and chose my outfit for the day. “Victoria?" I questioned, “How long will I be here?” “For as long as you need to be. I cannot answer you with an exact number because we do not know the extent of the danger you’re in”, she responded. She grabbed the brush off the vanity and motioned for me to sit on the chair that was in front of her.

“Davina, it’s your first school dance. You’ve never wanted to attend any of the other’s. Please let me help you pick a dress” my mom urged as I was getting ready for school. It was Friday morning and all I wanted was to get school over with so I could relax for the weekend. “No, mom! I already have what I am wearing picked out. I wouldn’t even be going if you hadn’t threatened to ground me.” I barked in response. School dances weren’t my thing. School just wasn’t my thing in general.

I ran fast and I ran far. It was extremely cold out. My hands were stinging and my face numb. I didn’t feel the tree limb when I hit it. I saw blood on my hands and that’s how I knew the tree limb did damage. I looked into the screen on my MP3 player and saw the gash on my right cheek. I decided that I had gotten far enough away from the place I used to call home and I knew that it was time for me to rest. I needed to get some sleep so I curled up in a ball under the tree that I had run into and I went to sleep.
