The Roux Where it Happened
James held the thick iron pan over the fire with practiced hands. As the butter melted, he mixed in the flour until the grainy texture gave way to a smooth paste. The deep, nutty aroma of the roux suffused the cramped kitchen and transported him back to the Champs-Élysées. James heaved a deep sigh. He never should have left Paris. There he was a free man. It was not an easy life, but at least it was his own.

Sarah heaved a deep sigh and slumped in the chair. She unhooked her bra and tossed it across the room. It missed the hamper by an impressively wide margin. She closed the lid on her laptop and trudged the three steps to the kitchen and poured a glass of wine. Five hundred applications and not a peep! Sarah should have listened to her mother and majored in something useful like engineering or computer science. But no, writing was her passion. Student loans and the barista life be damned!

Anna’s eyes watered as they jumped across the screen. She’d been staring at the code for two weeks straight, with only occasional breaks to stow the laptop and the rest of their gear under the weathered floorboards. Sirens blared outside, but she barely noticed anymore. The only thing that made her hackles rise were the scuffed leather boots against the cobblestones.
