(This is part of a series. You are invited to read the other stories as well.) ~ The phone call alerted me the papers were served. In his hands, he was holding the divorce papers that were 24 years and 68 days coming, the very papers that notified him I was officially filing for divorce.

How Does This Happen?
How does this happen? ~ How can one person enter my life and so quickly become my world? ~ I set up defenses to protect myself from this kind of thing. Walls of self-preservation. Bitterness toward men. Lack of trust toward humanity in general. Dedicated to avoiding public and private socializing or even casual conversation. Developed a cynical attitude toward relationships. Began to objectify men. Played with hearts with little to no remorse.

(This is a continuing series. Please check out my other stories.) ~ It took 24 years and 68 days. ~ However, it didn’t arrive without much anguish. It took years to even start opening my eyes; it took years to begin unraveling the knotted web in which he had trapped me. It took years to start questioning his actions toward me, it took years to start identifying the brainwashing, it took years to start seeing the good in myself, it took years to grant myself permission to accept that I tried the best I could, to think that maybe all those bad names and criticisms weren’t all justified.

The Notice of Privacy Statement
I was at the pharmacy the other day, and it tickled me that I had to sign a form to acknowledge I was aware of my privacy rights - to be more specific, I had to sign at the bottom of this form, under a long list of other customer names with stickers out beside each one that indicated how many prescriptions each person received.
