I've always had a talent and a joy for writing, but with COVID19, lockdowns and quarantines, i've been able to finally find the time to get back into it.

To my Dad
‘And his father was a farmer before him, and his father a farmer before him…’ and on and on rattled the overused sentiments and stories Dad had been forcing down my throat for years. It broke his heart that I, his only son, was going to university to be an accountant, rather than take up the mantle of managing the family farm. Most parents would be so proud of their son for choosing to go to university, being accepted, and wanting to become an accountant, but for my dad it was a ridiculous notion. I never felt that I was good enough, and now who was going to take over the day-to-day duties, and the long-term life of our family home? Maybe I did let him down.

Golden goodbye
Your hands are blurry on your lap in front of you. Why are they so blurry? You blink, and wetness falls from your eyes, down your cheek onto one of your hands, Ah, that’s why. You reach up and wipe your eyes, underneath your glasses, more tears, more pain, it’s never ending. Another deep breath in, another deep breath out. My body feels so heavy, I just want to lie down. As soon as you think it, your body leans forward, ready to push you through the inevitable. Stepping forward, you reach the mirror, your face is already puffy under your glasses, and the creases in your black dress show how long you’ve been sitting on the side of the bed avoiding this moment. Your eyes look you over, there’s pity and sadness there, and you’re not ready. You’re not interested in today. There’s so much sadness and anger, and the world still keeps turning, despite the fact that your heart has stopped.

A week in the life of a sad and lonely shark.
Monday Oh, that one looks interesting. That one’s got red hair, it’s not often that humans with red hair come past, I wonder why there’s not as many of them as all the other ones with black, and brown and yellow hair… there’s a lot of humans here today, I wonder why there’s so many of them. Lots of the little ones as well. I’ve been here a long time, but I’m still not sure whether or not I like the little ones. They always turn away from me, I don’t know why. The male ones are quite rude though. The big male ones, they always gawk and stare, and point. So rude. The big lady ones, they’re a bit like the little ones, most of the time scared. Some of them look sad when they look at me though. I don’t know why; it seems a bit strange.

Have you ever been forced into a hobby?
I can’t say that I’ve ever been the most creative person. I mean I like to think that I was creative, but I feel like every time, throughout my childhood, that I tried to bring to life something imaginative and joyful, I just didn’t have the technical skill to pull it together and make it beautiful. I had friends in high school that went through Art class with stunning abilities and skills, and even my Step Dad and my sister were quite talented at drawing, however, I just didn’t seem to make the cut with the creatives. I’ve always been good with words, capable of writing, and I’ve dabbled in journaling, or creative writing every so often, but it just never felt the same as having a talent like being a wonderful painter, or being able to make music. So, I think for the most part, I pushed myself into academia, always thriving, and then keeping my creative writing to myself, cause it’s not really something that anyone else was ever interested in.

When Nothing Else Matters
The phone rang shrill and high pitched as it forced my ear drums and my eyelids into subservience before my brain could start functioning. I blinked several times in an effort to wake myself up as my body pulled itself upright and I tried to understand what was going on. I reached for my mobile, the only light in the room, buzzing and singing, with the words ‘Private number’ blinding me as I swiped the answer button.
