The war was sparked by a dispute over the succession of the Sultan of Zanzibar. The British favored one candidate, while the Zanzibaris favored another. When the British consul demanded that the candidate they favored be installed, the Zanzibaris refused and barricaded themselves in the palace. The British responded by sending warships to the harbor and bombarding the palace. The Sultan's forces were quickly overwhelmed, and the Sultan himself fled to the German consulate. The war was over in just 38 minutes, making it the shortest war in recorded history.Only a few people were killed in the war, with most of the casualties being on the Zanzibari side.
