6:11 AM Junior wakes with a secret simmering behind his eyes. Today, he's going to freeze the sun. Both of his alarms go off fifteen minutes before dawn. He dresses quickly, gathers his grocery bag full of granola bars and superhero umbrella, and clears the junk from his desk. The junk has fulfilled its purpose: hiding Junior's secret ritual for freezing the sun.

I’m scared of holding babies. For context, I’m great with kids. I teach music lessons for a living, with students ranging from four years old to retired (and I don’t ask their ages). I taught preschool music for three years and had a splendid time wrangling two-to-five year olds who could form rudimentary sentences and scream song lyrics back at me.

Death came when Quentin least expected: that is to say, late. She strode through the door at five past nine. Bowler hat in hand, peacoat soaked by the sudden rain, blonde curls flying in every direction except the one ordained by gravity. Quentin watched her cross the linoleum, her corporeal form passing directly through the nurse on call before settling into the empty rattan chair reserved for loved ones.
