The Harvest

It happened again. I jolted awake to a lightning storm at 4:44am, having had the same vivid dream I’ve had for the past 4 nights. I feel out of breath and need to hydrate my weakened body. I lift myself from my squeaky old bed that needed replacing years ago. My feet touch the cold tiles. I keep the lights off so I don’t have to squint from readjusting to the light. I grab a cup from the kitchen and fill it with water, downing the entire tall glass before walking back to my bedroom in darkness. Lying back down, I tuck my cold feet under the covers. The storm outside swells to a climax. The rain slaps the pavement while the wind whistles a shrill through my window. A spark of light jousts the opposing wall from the window as a monstrous sound of thunder follows. I pull the covers tightly around my shoulders and replay my dream.
