Why beauty can make a song sad ?
The story behind a song
Listening to a song often feels like we lose ourselves into the lyrics and our thoughts dance with the melody and we connect with the singer's emotion. So is the song "August", the last month of summer where we reminisce about the beginning of our carelessness in June, the course of our relationship with the salt of the sea and the hot sun of July, the month of August is the month of farewell, it is to remind us of the end of the journey. August doesn't promise you anything, it reminds you.
So some songs are about nostalgia, joy, summer loves that remain in time, secrets that were not revealed, but about moments that never happened. We don't hear songs only with our ears, but mainly with our memories. This is what the Greek singer Nikos Papazoglou told us in his song "Augustus," a song that speaks of beauty and sadness.
One morning in August 1973, a man, after a long journey, arrives in Pelion. He needs peace after a disaster that has befallen his home in Thessaloniki after a major earthquake.Arriving at the port, he searches for his next step. He searches for a solution to rebuild his home, wanting to escape from that unfortunate moment .His thoughts suddenly stop, he encounters a girl, a very beautiful girl and that's where his heart is troubled.
He is charmed by her flowing hair, the golden sand embracing her body, the blue eyes that look like stars. He can't get her out of his mind, he is drawn to her youthful innocence, her gaze that looks like the night sky, she presents her as the breath of summer. And where he was overflowing with joy and enthusiasm, something pulls him away, he is flooded with guilty thoughts. If he goes to meet her, it will end badly for him.
There is already a woman in his life and doesn't want to hurt her. Afraid of her beauty, he moves away so that his marriage isn't jeopardized. Thinking about to telling her, but he doesn't dare.Even if it hurts the best choce is to leave . That's why his silence becomes this song, about the first day of August when he saw this beautiful girl, who made him forget for a while his tragic situation but also reminded him that someone else was already waiting for him.He couldn't ignore her beauty, but could't forget it either.
A song is never just the story it tells. It's the moments we hear it in, the people we have in our minds, and everything that wasn't said when it should have been or even when it shouldn't have been said.Every time a song plays, it carries something different, depending on who is listening to it and when. The same song can be joyful to one age and heavy to another. It may seem simple when we hear it superficially, but it may become almost confessional when our lives have taught us what loss means, the choices we make, and the silence.
Maybe that's why some songs like August cannot be listened to without a weight on the chest. They don't just talk about a beautiful girl or a summer that passed, but about everything that could have happened and never did. And it is this feeling of unfulfilled that turns beauty into sadness.
Sometimes beauty doesn't necessarily ask to be touched. It ask to be remembered, ask to be admired..And these memories are what make the songs sadder. Maybe that's why such songs stay with us longer than we would like because they become a part of us .
