One of my best filmic experiences of 2024 was, believe it or not, choosing to watch Alien Resurrection while feeling terribly unwell in bed.

In hindsight, it was probably the single worst film I could have chosen when testing new medications and feeling some truly horrendous side effects… but the experience was amazing.

While the story is a little nonsensical and it largely follows the tropes of the typical tight knit army group dynamic, there was something to the ballsy creature designs, the bombastic weirdness of it all that made the film immeasurably appealing in that one specific moment.

This year also saw me rewatch Aliens after years of, inexplicably, thinking relatively little of it compared to Ridley Scott’s original — that’s a film I’m more than willing to admit I was wrong about, it is fantastic!

So, the Alien franchise has been in the back of my mind for at least 6 months of this year so far.

It has been dwelling in there somewhere, percolating, gaining gradual power.

And while I still struggle with the cinema experience — the overwhelming sound levels, the uncomfortable seats, being either on the verge of boiling to death or pulling…
